Since it has not so far been possible to separate heart muscle cytochromes a and a3 and thus to study the properties of the two pigments, another approach to this problem was found in a study of cells containing a different cytochrome make-up from that found in heart muscle. It was found that Micrococcus pyogenes var. albus seemed to contain cytochrome a, but no cytochrome a3 (l-3) ; thus in these cells the reactions of cytochrome a could be studied in the absence of cytochrome as. In Bacillus subtilis there was observed a different ratio of cytochrome a to cytochrome a3 from that present in heart muscle extracts (1, 4). This paper describes the absorption spectra of these two organisms and the changes in absorption spectra which result from reaction with carbon monoxide and cyanide.
